5 Signs You Need to Rewire Your Las Vegas Home

Many Las Vegas homes were built during the city's rapid growth periods of the 1960s through 1990s. While these homes have served families well, their electrical systems weren't designed for today's power demands — smart devices, home offices, EV chargers, and modern HVAC systems all draw significantly more power than the appliances of decades past.

Here are five warning signs that your home may need a rewire:

1. Your Circuit Breakers Trip Frequently

If you're constantly resetting breakers, your electrical system is telling you something. Frequent tripping means your circuits are overloaded — they're carrying more current than they were designed to handle. While an occasional trip is normal, if it happens weekly or even daily, your wiring likely can't keep up with your household's electrical demand.

In Las Vegas, where air conditioning runs heavily from May through October, this is especially common in older homes. The AC unit alone can draw 15-20 amps, and when combined with modern appliances, older 100-amp panels simply can't keep up.

2. You Notice Flickering or Dimming Lights

Lights that flicker or dim when you turn on another appliance — like a vacuum, microwave, or hair dryer — indicate that your wiring is struggling to distribute power properly. This usually means the circuits are sharing loads they shouldn't be, or the wiring gauge is too small for current demands.

Don't brush this off as a minor annoyance. Flickering lights can indicate loose connections, which create heat and increase fire risk.

3. Your Home Has Aluminum Wiring

Homes built between the mid-1960s and late 1970s may contain aluminum wiring instead of copper. Aluminum wiring expands and contracts more than copper when heated, which loosens connections over time. The Consumer Product Safety Commission found that homes with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to have fire-hazard conditions at outlets.

If your home was built during this era and you haven't confirmed what type of wiring you have, it's worth getting an electrical inspection. Ferguson's licensed electricians can quickly determine your wiring type and recommend the safest path forward.

4. Your Outlets Are Warm, Discolored, or Sparking

Touch your outlet covers periodically. If they feel warm, if you see discoloration or scorch marks around them, or if you notice small sparks when plugging in devices, you have a serious safety concern. These are signs of damaged wiring, loose connections, or arcing — all of which are fire hazards.

In the dry Las Vegas climate, electrical fires can spread rapidly. Don't wait on this one.

5. You Don't Have Enough Outlets or They're All Two-Prong

If you're relying on extension cords and power strips throughout your home because there aren't enough outlets, your electrical system is outdated. Two-prong outlets indicate your home lacks grounding — a critical safety feature that protects you from electrical shock and your electronics from power surges.

Modern electrical code requires grounded outlets throughout the home, GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas, and AFCI protection in bedrooms and living spaces. A rewire brings your home up to current NEC standards.

What Does a Whole-House Rewire Involve?

A whole-house rewire replaces all of the old wiring in your home with new copper wiring, installs a modern electrical panel (typically 200 amps), adds grounded outlets throughout, and brings everything up to current code. It's one of the best investments you can make in your home's safety and value.
